What is Decentraland?

Decentraland is a user-generated virtual social world, publicly launched in 2020 after a project that began in 2015. Its live product includes desktop and mobile clients, community events, creator-built scenes, Worlds, avatars, Wearables, Emotes and a Marketplace. The current official description emphasizes showing up, social connection, creation and community governance rather than presenting MANA as the world itself.

MANA is the fungible ERC-20 token associated with that ecosystem. LAND parcels, Estates, NAMEs, Wearables and Emotes are separate on-chain assets. Holding MANA can provide DAO voting power, but MANA ownership alone does not convey a parcel, an NFT, a share of treasury revenue or a legal ownership interest in the Decentraland Foundation.

What problem does Decentraland solve?

The original project addressed a digital-ownership and creator-economy problem: its white paper proposed a shared 3D world in which blockchain-recorded LAND could host user content and creators could transact without a single platform operator controlling the ledger. MANA was designed as the fungible currency used to acquire LAND and buy in-world goods and services.

The live product addresses social presence, user-generated experiences and digital-asset trading through clients, community infrastructure and DAO governance. Those are current product claims; the white papers' broader ambitions—such as an entirely self-sustaining decentralized world and future platform capabilities—should be read as design goals or roadmap context, not guarantees that every proposed mechanism is live today.

How does Decentraland work?

MANA is an Ethereum ERC-20 with 18 decimals at the verified contract address 0x0F5D2fB29fb7d3CFeE444a200298f468908cC942. The original design described MANA as a currency for LAND and in-world goods; today the ecosystem also routes governance participation and marketplace activity through a broader asset system in which LAND, NAMEs and other NFTs remain distinct. DAO documentation states that 1 MANA contributes 1 voting-power unit, with voting power snapshot at proposal creation; this is governance influence, not an equity or revenue right.

Etherscan's verified ABI exposes inherited MintableToken and PausableToken functions (mint, finishMinting, pause, unpause, owner, transferOwnership) and a burn function. The source repository shows that burning reduces the caller's balance and totalSupply, while minting and pausing are inherited owner-controlled mechanisms. The contract is not presented as upgradeable: the verified ABI shows no proxy or upgrade function, but an owner-controlled mint/pause surface remains a material administrative risk. Do not infer that exposed functions are currently enabled or exercised without checking on-chain state. Etherscan records a 2,193,179,327.320146244857883456 MANA max-total-supply snapshot; the 2024 white paper states that the Foundation and DAO each received 222 million MANA vesting contracts extending to at least August 2030, so supply and concentration should be monitored rather than treated as static.

Key facts

  • Decentraland began in 2015 and publicly launched on February 20, 2020, according to the project's current documentation and White Paper 2.0.
  • The canonical MANA contract is the verified Ethereum MANAToken at 0x0F5D2fB29fb7d3CFeE444a200298f468908cC942, with symbol MANA and 18 decimals.
  • Etherscan's Aug. 24, 2026 snapshot lists max total supply of 2,193,179,327.320146244857883456 MANA; this is a time-stamped on-chain reading, not a promise of a permanently fixed circulating amount.
  • The DAO documentation gives MANA holders voting power at 1 MANA = 1 VP, alongside separate voting power for NAMEs and LAND; proposal voting power is set when a proposal is created.
  • The DAO owns or controls critical ecosystem contracts including LAND, Estates, Names, Catalyst-node lists, wearable collections, Marketplace contracts and grant vesting contracts.
  • The verified token ABI exposes minting, finish-minting, pause/unpause, ownership transfer and burning functions; the source contract has no proxy/upgrade function visible in the verified ABI.
  • The 2024 White Paper states that the Foundation and DAO each had a 222 million MANA vesting contract extending to at least August 2030, making unlock timing and concentration relevant.
  • MANA is not LAND: owning MANA does not by itself grant a parcel, an NFT, a redemption right, Foundation equity or a contractual share of Marketplace fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is MANA the same thing as Decentraland LAND?

No. MANA is a fungible ERC-20. LAND is a separate non-fungible parcel asset, and Estates, NAMEs, Wearables and Emotes are also distinct assets. MANA may be used in the ecosystem, but holding it does not grant a LAND parcel.

What rights does a MANA holder actually have?

The clearest documented holder right is participation in Decentraland DAO governance: the documentation assigns 1 voting-power unit per MANA, subject to proposal rules and the snapshot at proposal creation. The sources do not establish a legal right to Foundation profits, Marketplace fees, treasury distributions, redemption, or ownership of Decentraland's company/non-profit.

What is live today versus only planned?

The current documentation describes live desktop and mobile clients, events, avatar customization, creator tools, Worlds, Marketplace activity and DAO participation. The white papers also contain forward-looking architecture and roadmap language; those passages should not be read as proof that every proposed payment, storage, client or governance feature is currently deployed.

Can the MANA contract mint, pause or freeze transfers?

The verified MANAToken ABI inherits minting and pausing functions and exposes mint, finishMinting, pause, unpause and owner/ownership-transfer methods. The source shows burning is blocked while paused. This proves an administrative control surface exists in the deployed contract; it does not by itself prove the current owner, paused state, mintingFinished state or recent use. There is no upgrade function visible in the verified ABI.

What is known about MANA supply and vesting?

Etherscan's Aug. 24, 2026 token snapshot reports 2,193,179,327.320146244857883456 MANA max total supply. Separately, White Paper 2.0 says the Foundation and DAO were each endowed with a 222 million MANA vesting contract lasting to at least August 2030. Unlocks and holder concentration can therefore change the effective supply distribution over time.

Does MANA pay dividends or give a claim on the DAO treasury?

No such right is established by the cited documentation. MANA grants governance voting power under DAO rules; Marketplace fees and treasury management are governance/economic mechanisms, not evidence that every MANA holder owns a pro-rata treasury claim.
