DeepBook

At a Sui builder event on 2 March 2023, MovEX introduced DeepBook as a shared central limit order book. MovEX worked with Mysten Labs on the engineering while Sui Foundation funded the effort and said it would administer the open-source protocol. The “public good” was not meant to replace every wallet or exchange screen; it was meant to give those screens a common source of orders and settlement.

DeepBook reached Sui mainnet on 12 July 2023. Kriya, Turbos, Aftermath, Cetus, MovEX and other teams tested or integrated it, while professional firms helped with market making and development. The launch turned liquidity into reusable infrastructure: an order entered through one app could strengthen the same pool another app queried.

For more than a year, DeepBook’s product and its eventual token were separate stories. Version 2 handled spot market and limit orders without a native governance asset. By the version 3 launch announcement, Sui Foundation said the predecessor had processed more than $5 billion in on-chain volume for over 740,000 unique wallets. Those are foundation-reported usage figures, but they show why the team chose to redesign an operating market rather than launch a token around an empty venue.

The architecture also explains why DeepBook can feel invisible. Its pool stores the book, state and vault; a BalanceManager holds an account’s assets and permissions. Front ends and aggregators compose those objects into their own experience. Users still face pool depth, smart-contract execution and whichever interface they chose, even though matching and settlement are on Sui.

On 28 March 2024, selected early users received DBClaimNFT. It recorded how many DEEP tokens the wallet could unwrap at launch but could not be transferred, swapped or sold. That design recognized test users while preventing the claim itself from becoming a pre-launch market.

The token package was published the same day and minted the full 10 billion DEEP supply at once. On 14 October, DeepBook V3 and liquid DEEP launched together. V3 attached a currency to actual order-book work: fees, low-liquidity maker rebates, discounts for sufficiently staked takers and votes over parameters in a particular pool.

DEEP governance is deliberately narrow. A staker votes inside a pool on taker fees, maker fees and the stake threshold. Voting weight becomes less than linear above a threshold, an attempt to limit whale capture without making cheap wallet splitting decisive. A vote does not upgrade DeepBook, govern Sui or entitle the voter to the protocol’s treasury.

That division matters as DeepBook changes. Core version 8, published in May 2026, remains upgradeable, with UpgradeCap and DeepbookAdminCap held by one address. The DEEP token package is immutable and its protected treasury permits burning and supply inspection, not further minting. A new execution release can therefore change the order-book service without reopening the token’s original issuance.

DeepBook uses collected fees first for eligible maker rebates and can burn the remainder. The mechanism makes token destruction depend on trading rather than a fixed calendar. At review, the TreasuryCap showed 9,966,267,136.653372 DEEP, so 33,732,863.346628 had disappeared from the 10 billion minted at genesis.

The official token page simultaneously displayed 125.7 million DEEP burned. Its release section also says only 25% was unlocked at genesis and tokens release over seven years, yet labels the 61.57% ecosystem bucket fully unlocked and distributed at TGE. Neither conflict is reconciled on the page.
