The lessons came first; EDU became their coordination layer

Open Campus did not begin by inventing an education app. It began after TinyTap had already spent a decade building one and had tested course-publishing NFTs. EDU's history is the attempt to connect that working product to a token, an identity system, a DAO and finally a dedicated chain—without turning token ownership into ownership of the school or its revenue.

A classroom product existed before the protocol

TinyTap was founded in 2012 as a no-code platform for teacher-made learning games. In November 2022, after Animoca Brands acquired the company, six course-linked Publisher NFTs sold for 138.926 ETH. The company reported that 67.7 ETH went to the six teachers. The NFTs represented co-publishing roles around specific courses; they did not require EDU, which did not yet exist.

That chronology matters. Open Campus inherited a launch partner with users, lessons and a revenue-sharing model. Its contribution was to turn the early NFT experiment into a broader protocol story, not to retroactively create TinyTap's education business.

One billion tokens arrived in a single deployment

On 28 April 2023, Binance completed the sale of 50 million EDU at USD 0.05 and opened trading. The BNB contract had already created its entire one-billion supply for constructor recipients. The published allocation reserved 25% for the ecosystem, 15.5% for advisers, 13% for the strategic sale and 10% each for team, treasury and liquidity; initial reported circulation was 145 million.

The canonical contract is unusually plain about future supply. It is not a proxy and has no mint, burn or pause function. Owner 0x5a46…3612 can alter token metadata and recover assets trapped in the contract, but the reviewed code gives it no general path to rewrite holder balances. Allocation and vesting concentration remain economic risks even without an inflation switch.

Publishing produced a measurable EDU transaction

In November 2023, Publisher NFT Season 2 sold 720 course-linked assets for 538,560 EDU and involved 168 educators. The arrangement gave each creator 50% of net initial proceeds, a 10% continuing share of course revenue and a 5% secondary-sale royalty, while active co-publishers could receive up to 80% of the course's allocated revenue share.

Those rights belong to the relevant Publisher NFT arrangement. Merely holding EDU does not make someone a course co-publisher or entitle them to teacher revenue. EDU was the payment and coordination asset; the NFT and platform terms carried the content-specific economics.

Identity and a chain widened the ambition

Open Campus ID launched on 23 January 2024. By 18 March, the project reported more than 100,000 claimed identifiers. On 17 January 2025, EDU Chain mainnet followed: an Arbitrum Orbit Layer 3, chain ID 41923, using EDU as native gas. The chain launch turned EDU from a marketplace and governance token into the fee asset for a general application network. Native EDU has no ERC-20 address on that network; 0xd02E…4e12 is WEDU, the separate deposit-and-withdraw wrapper.

Launch does not make every education promise operational. Current user documentation lists Publisher NFT minting and asset purchases as available uses, but still marks verifiable-credential minting and premium Open Campus University access as coming soon. Large partner, wallet, transaction and TVL figures should be read as project-reported reach, not as proof of completed credential adoption.

Yuzu ran an EDU Chain staking program that recorded activity as points. Open Campus ended staking and point accrual on 31 July 2026 and retired its dashboard, faucet, referral and bridge pages. Existing stakers kept an on-chain exit through WEDU. The chain and token continued, but one incentive layer did not.

Fixed supply did not remove operational trust

EDU crossed chains through OFTV2 contracts at 0xf817…4d11 on Ethereum and Arbitrum. A send removes local units and a valid LayerZero message credits the destination, so local supplies fluctuate and cannot simply be added to the canonical billion. The OFTV2 owner 0xec01…573f can change trusted remotes and messaging settings. Both that owner and the BNB token owner are currently EOAs whose human or legal controllers are not identified in the reviewed primary sources.

Governance also has layers. The live DAO forum records proposals and Council elections, while the published process lets EDU holders propose and vote and assigns the Council and administrators to vet guideline compliance. The issuer, EDU Digital (BVI) Ltd, says the token carries no equity, dividend, interest, redemption or claim against Open Campus. Its MiCA paper is an issuer-authored disclosure that explicitly says no competent authority approved it. EDU can coordinate a network; it does not collapse technical control, DAO voice and legal ownership into the same right.

What is Open Campus?

Open Campus is an education-focused blockchain project whose EDU token began trading on 28 April 2023. The canonical BNB Chain contract created a fixed one-billion supply at deployment. Ethereum and Arbitrum use LayerZero OFTV2 representations, while EDU is the native gas currency of EDU Chain, an Arbitrum Orbit Layer 3 launched in January 2025. On EDU Chain, the address 0xd02E…4e12 is WEDU, a separate wrapper created when native EDU is deposited, not another canonical issuance contract.

The project links several different things: DAO proposals, Open Campus ID, EDU Chain, grants and Publisher NFTs for TinyTap courses. Those products do not create one bundle of legal rights. EDU pays gas and can participate in available governance and product flows; a separate Publisher NFT carries the course-specific co-publishing arrangement.

What problem does Open Campus solve?

Open Campus marketing often places TinyTap's long operating history, partner reach and future education infrastructure in one story. The dates show a narrower sequence. TinyTap was founded in 2012 and auctioned Publisher NFTs in 2022; Open Campus and EDU arrived in 2023. Open Campus later supplied the token, marketplace coordination, identity layer and chain, but did not create TinyTap's existing lesson library.

The same distinction applies to utility. Publisher NFT sales, Open Campus ID and EDU Chain are observable launches. Current documentation still marks credential minting and premium Open Campus University access as coming soon. Partner counts, user totals and launch-day TVL are reported metrics, not audited proof that schools issue credentials or learners control every academic record today.

How does Open Campus work?

The BNB contract at 0xBdEA…2639 minted one billion EDU to constructor recipients and has no later mint, burn, pause or proxy-upgrade path. Its current EOA owner, 0x5a46…3612, can change the token URI, recover assets accidentally held by the token contract and transfer ownership. The reviewed ABI does not let that owner confiscate arbitrary holder balances.

Cross-chain copies work differently. The Ethereum and Arbitrum contract at 0xf817…4d11 is LayerZero OFTV2: sending burns or locks the local representation and a valid remote message credits the destination. Its current EOA owner, 0xec01…573f, can change trusted remotes and messaging configuration or force message receipt to resume. Per-chain totalSupply therefore measures local bridge balances, not extra tokens to add to the one-billion cap. EDU Chain itself uses EDU as native gas. The address 0xd02E…4e12 is instead WEDU: its live code wraps deposited native EDU through deposit and withdraw functions and exposes no owner() entry point.

EDU holders may submit and vote on Open Campus DAO proposals under the current process, while the Council and administrators vet proposals against guidelines. EDU can also buy available Open Campus assets and services. These protocol functions are not corporate rights: the issuer's MiCA paper says EDU is non-redeemable and non-interest-bearing and grants no equity, dividend or claim against Open Campus. Course revenue rights depend on owning the relevant Publisher NFT and its separate terms.

Frequently asked questions

Which EDU contract is canonical?

The fixed-supply BNB Chain token is 0xBdEA…2639. Ethereum and Arbitrum run the same-address OFTV2 representation at 0xf817…4d11, as verified by their live contracts and RPC state. EDU Chain uses EDU as native gas rather than that address as an ERC-20. The EDU Chain address 0xd02E…4e12 is WEDU, a separate wrapper for deposited native EDU, not another EDU issuance contract.

Can the owner mint or freeze more EDU?

The verified BNB token has no mint, burn or pause function and is not a proxy. Its EOA owner can change metadata, recover assets held by the contract and transfer ownership. Bridge owners separately control messaging trust and configuration.

Did Open Campus create TinyTap?

No. TinyTap dates to 2012 and its first Publisher NFT auctions to 2022. TinyTap and Animoca Brands became Open Campus launch partners; EDU later became part of the publishing and ecosystem flows.

Does EDU ownership pay course revenue?

No automatic course-revenue right attaches to EDU. The published TinyTap arrangement links co-publishing revenue to a specific Publisher NFT and its terms. EDU itself is gas, governance and product currency.

Does EDU give a legal claim on Open Campus?

No. The issuer says EDU is non-redeemable and non-interest-bearing and gives no equity, dividend or contractual claim against Open Campus or the issuer. That statement comes from the issuer’s MiCA disclosure, which also says it has not been approved by a competent authority.

Are all advertised education functions live?

No. Publisher NFT sales, Open Campus ID and EDU Chain launched, while Yuzu staking and several related pages ended on 31 July 2026. Current docs still label credential minting and premium Open Campus University access as coming soon.
