Helium HNT: From a Hotspot-Built Chain to Solana and a New Emissions Bargain

Helium began HNT issuance without a premine in July 2019 to reward people who deployed wireless hotspots. Its history is not one uninterrupted mining story: the network moved to Solana in April 2023, later returned IoT and Mobile rewards to HNT, and in 2026 approved HIP 149, a controversial supply and utility realignment whose implementation boundary must still be dated carefully.

A wireless network bootstrapped with HNT

Founded in 2013, Helium spent years pursuing decentralized wireless infrastructure before first issuing HNT on 2019-07-29. Hotspot operators supplied coverage and earned protocol rewards; users acquired Data Credits by burning HNT to pay predictable, dollar-priced network fees.

HIP 20 formalized two-year halvings and net emissions. Its often-cited roughly 223 million maximum reflected underproduction under the original schedule, but that figure is no longer a complete description after the later HIP 149 decision.

The network leaves its own blockchain

HIP 70 moved token, governance, and economic accounting to Solana and shifted Proof-of-Coverage and data accounting toward off-chain oracles. The cutover began on 2023-04-18 and completion was reported on 2023-04-19, so both dates appear in reliable records.

The migration reduced the burden of maintaining a custom chain, but it also made Solana program upgrades, circuit breakers, Squads multisigs, and oracle operations explicit trust assumptions. HNT's mint authority remains a circuit-breaker program address rather than a null authority.

One reward token again—and a larger supply debate

HIP 138 stopped new IOT and MOBILE issuance and returned subnetwork rewards to HNT; on-chain mint authorities for IOT and MOBILE are now null. Governance uses locked, non-transferable veHNT rather than freely held HNT.

Approved HIP 149 proposes roughly 141 million supplemental HNT over 36 months, removes Proof-of-Coverage rewards, and directs the supplemental issuance to a Nova Labs receiving entity under an advisory and vote-based framework. Official material says implementation is underway while secondary reporting describes parts as live, so CoinYQ does not invent a single activation timestamp.

How the project changed

  1. 2013
    Helium founded

The company that became Nova Labs began work on decentralized wireless infrastructure.

  2. 2019-07-29
    HNT issuance begins

The network issued its first HNT without a premine and began the original hotspot-reward era.

  3. 2022-09-22
    Community approves the Solana migration

The HIP 70 vote passed with 81.41% of participating voting weight in favor.

  4. 2023-04-18
    Solana cutover

Helium began the migration on April 18; completion was reported on April 19 after the roughly 24-hour transition.

  5. 2025-03-25
    Return-to-HNT deployment recorded

The HIP 138 implementation issue closed as deployed, ending new IOT and MOBILE rewards in favor of HNT.

  6. 2026-07-02
    HIP 149 vote window closes

The emissions and utility realignment passed and moved into implementation, without one verified full-activation timestamp.

What is Helium?

Helium coordinates community-deployed IoT and mobile wireless infrastructure. HNT is paid as a protocol reward, can be burned to create non-transferable, dollar-priced Data Credits, and can be locked as veHNT for voting. The canonical Solana mint is hntyVP6YFm1Hg25TN9WGLqM12b8TQmcknKrdu1oxWux with 8 decimals.

What problem does Helium solve?

Wireless coverage usually requires centralized capital and carrier control. Helium tried to bootstrap coverage by rewarding independent hotspot operators, then confronted weak early data demand, a custom-chain bottleneck, and the need to separate network governance from Nova Labs' commercial and development roles.

How does Helium work?

Devices spend Data Credits for network use; creating DC burns HNT. After HIP 70, Solana holds token and governance state while off-chain oracles account for coverage and data. HIP 138 returned IoT and Mobile rewards to HNT, and veHNT lockups govern proposals. HIP 149 passed in 2026 but its full program-upgrade boundary remains under implementation.

Key facts

  • HNT first issued on 2019-07-29 with no premine; HIP 20 introduced two-year halvings and net emissions.
  • Helium moved token, governance, and economic state to Solana on 2023-04-18, with completion reported on 2023-04-19.
  • One Data Credit equals $0.00001 and is created by burning HNT; DC is not transferable after creation.
  • Approved HIP 149 proposes about 141 million supplemental HNT over 36 months and ends Proof-of-Coverage rewards, but reviewed sources differ on how much is already live.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct HNT Solana mint?

hntyVP6YFm1Hg25TN9WGLqM12b8TQmcknKrdu1oxWux. Solana addresses are case-sensitive.

Does holding HNT itself provide votes?

No. HNT must be locked into non-transferable veHNT for protocol voting power.

Does HNT represent ownership of Helium or Nova Labs?

No reviewed primary source grants equity, dividends, company ownership, or a claim on unminted HNT.
