The world computer has more than one set of keys

Internet Computer did not replace administrators with a single autonomous machine. It split authority among neuron voters, NNS system canisters, DFINITY engineers, approved machine operators, subnet replicas, and application controllers. Its most revealing story is therefore not raw speed. It is the map of who can rewrite which layer—and what an ICP token does and does not buy.

Genesis turned a foundation's design into a governed network

DFINITY spent years designing a chain that could serve software and web content. The May 10, 2021 genesis opened the production network and activated the NNS. DFINITY did not vanish at that moment: it continued to research the protocol, write releases, and submit proposals. But authored code is not automatically live code. The formal path to network-level adoption runs through NNS proposals and system-canister execution.

That distinction matters because 'community governed' can be heard as a claim about social influence. The protocol makes a narrower, testable claim: neurons vote, adopted proposal types call specified methods, and the registry propagates the resulting topology or version change. Who holds enough coordinated voting power is a separate empirical question, and the public material reviewed here does not completely identify every beneficial owner.

One computer is assembled from many subnet ledgers

A canister combines WebAssembly code and persistent state, but it does not run on every Internet Computer node. It is assigned to one subnet, whose members replicate and execute it. The NNS registry links those separate chains into one address space by recording membership, software versions, routing ranges, and assignments.

This architecture enables scaling, while making topology governance consequential. NNS proposals can create a subnet, swap its nodes, recover a stalled subnet, change firewall rules, or reroute canister ranges. Node providers supply machines and registered node operators administer their assigned hardware; neither role alone decides the subnet map.

Neurons govern time-locked ICP, not every application

An ICP balance becomes an NNS vote only after it is locked in a neuron. A neuron needs at least six months of dissolve delay to vote, while longer commitments up to eight years receive more weight; stake, age, and activity rules also matter. Adopted proposals can change protocol canisters, economics, node rewards, and network configuration. They do not automatically replace the controller list of every independently deployed app.

Reverse gas separates the visitor from the fuel token

Canisters prepay computation with cycles. One trillion cycles follow one SDR/XDR, and the canister spends them on execution, storage, messages, and cryptographic services. A visitor can therefore call an application without holding ICP. ICP's job is upstream: it can be converted one-way into cycles, staked for governance, or transferred.

Supply follows those uses. Node-provider remuneration and spawned voting maturity create ICP; cycle conversion and some fees destroy it. The official API reading on September 4, 2026 was 556,204,661.33388347 ICP. Treating that number as a fixed maximum would erase the mechanism that produced it.

The last administrator is often the app controller

A controller can upgrade, reconfigure, stop, or delete its canister. Some teams retain that key, some use multisig, some hand control to an SNS, and some remove controllers entirely. Hosting on Internet Computer proves where code executes; it does not by itself prove who governs that code. ICP ownership likewise gives no automatic equity in DFINITY, revenue claim on the foundation, or ownership of the apps sharing the network.

What is Internet Computer?

Internet Computer is a public network where canisters—WebAssembly programs with persistent state—run on replicated subnet blockchains. A canister lives on one subnet and is executed by that subnet's nodes. The Network Nervous System (NNS), itself a group of system canisters, maintains the registry that tells the network which nodes form each subnet, which replica version they run, and where canister ranges are routed.

DFINITY Foundation designed the protocol and remains a major developer, but software authorship is different from formal network authority. Protocol and registry changes take effect through NNS proposals and execution. Physical machines belong to approved node providers and are operated under registered identities. Individual applications have their own canister controllers unless they deliberately hand control to an SNS, another governance system, or no controller at all.

What problem does Internet Computer solve?

Internet Computer began from the claim that blockchains could host software and web experiences rather than merely settle tokens. Its reverse-gas model makes the application pay for computation in cycles, allowing a visitor to use a canister without first buying ICP. Subnets let the network add replicated capacity instead of forcing every node to execute every application.

Those choices create a harder trust question than the slogan 'world computer' suggests. Network rules, physical machines, application code, and token voting are controlled at different layers. A useful account must ask which layer can change a subnet, who can replace an app, and what holding ICP actually grants.

How does Internet Computer work?

ICP can be transferred, locked in an NNS neuron, or converted one-way into cycles. A neuron with at least six months of dissolve delay can vote; stake, dissolve delay, age, and an activity adjustment shape voting power. Adopted proposals can change NNS-controlled code, economic parameters, subnet membership, firewall configuration, recovery records, and routing.

Canisters spend cycles for compute, storage, messages, and cryptographic operations. One trillion cycles track one SDR/XDR, insulating compute accounting from ICP's market price. Node-provider rewards and spawned voting maturity mint ICP; cycles conversion and some fees burn it, so supply is dynamic. On September 4, 2026, the official ledger API reported 556,204,661.33388347 ICP as both total and circulating supply. That observation is a timestamped ledger state, not a cap or forecast.

Key facts

  • The production network launched on May 10, 2021, with DFINITY continuing as a major research and software contributor after genesis.
  • A canister is replicated within one subnet, not on every node of the entire network.
  • The NNS registry records subnet membership, replica versions, node providers, routing tables, and canister assignments.
  • NNS proposals can upgrade system code, change network economics, create or recover subnets, change node membership, set firewalls, and reroute canister ranges.
  • Voting requires ICP locked in a neuron with at least six months of dissolve delay; the maximum dissolve-delay bonus is reached at eight years.
  • Node providers, node operators, NNS governance, and canister controllers are separate roles with different powers.
  • One trillion cycles equal one SDR/XDR of compute value; applications fund cycles so users need not hold ICP.
  • The September 4, 2026 ledger API snapshot showed 556,204,661.33388347 ICP, while mint-and-burn mechanisms mean the figure changes.
  • ICP does not by itself confer DFINITY equity, foundation revenue rights, or control over an arbitrary ICP application.
  • Public data reviewed here does not establish a complete beneficial-owner map of neurons or DFINITY's exact current aggregate NNS voting power.
  • Current canisters can use protocol services to query Bitcoin UTXOs and sign and submit Bitcoin transactions.
  • Current canisters can query Ethereum/EVM state and sign transactions through HTTPS outcalls, EVM RPC, and chain-key ECDSA.

Frequently asked questions

Does DFINITY control Internet Computer?

DFINITY remains a major protocol developer and can author upgrade proposals, but formal network changes described in the protocol pass through NNS governance and system-canister execution. Public records reviewed here do not let us calculate DFINITY and all related parties' current aggregate voting power, so categorical claims in either direction go beyond the evidence.

Does every node run every ICP application?

No. Each canister is assigned to one subnet and replicated across that subnet's nodes. The NNS registry controls topology and routing, while subnets execute their own canister sets.

What does staking ICP in a neuron grant?

It grants NNS voting power when the dissolve delay is at least six months, with weight affected by stake, delay, age, and current activity rules. It does not grant corporate equity or automatic control of application canisters.

Can an ICP app developer still change or delete the app?

Yes, if the developer or another principal remains a controller. Controllers can upgrade, stop, reconfigure, or delete a canister. An app must explicitly transfer control to an SNS or another governance arrangement, or remove controllers, for a different trust model.

Is ICP supply capped?

No fixed cap is documented. Node rewards and spawned voting maturity mint ICP, while conversion to cycles and some fees burn it. The displayed supply is therefore a time-specific ledger measurement.
