The social overlay that sold its token inside Twitter—and then outgrew Twitter

Mask began with a practical concession: people would keep using dominant social sites. It encrypted and augmented those pages instead of asking users to move. MASK’s 2021 sale turned that interface into the launch venue itself. Five years later the organization was stewarding Lens, but its public token-voting trail still ended in 2022. The gap between product expansion and visible governance is the central fact of its biography.

The product came before the token

Founded by Suji Yan in 2017, the team shipped its earliest extension in July 2019. A user created a Persona key, posted ciphertext on Twitter or Facebook, and let another extension user recover the encrypted content. The host network carried the post, while Mask supplied access control and an injected interface. It was a tool attached to a social network, not a replacement feed.

Payments followed in February 2020 through crypto red packets. By September, Mask had added a Twitter market and Uniswap widget and described a much larger future: lending, prediction markets, portfolio tools, smart wallets and pay-to-unlock commerce. Those plans belong in the record, but they should not be confused with the encrypted posts, red packets, file storage and trading surfaces that were already running.

Twitter became the token launchpad

The Ethereum token was deployed on 19 February 2021. Its constructor minted all 100 million MASK to the deployer. Verified code contains ordinary ERC-20 transfers and allowances only: there is no owner, further mint, burn, pause, blacklist or proxy upgrade. Distribution control occurred after that one mint, outside the token contract.

Mask used its own product thesis to distribute the token. The two-stage public sale assigned 3% to an Initial Twitter Offering embedded in Twitter and 4% to a Balancer liquidity bootstrapping pool; a separate 1% went to an airdrop whose claims opened after the LBP. The sale stages ran from 22 to 26 February 2021. The launch paper said all genesis supply would be unlocked by month 36. A fixed supply therefore describes issuance, not who held the unlocked tokens.

The DAO promise met a shorter public record

The 2021 paper called MaskDAO the final decision maker for MASK and reserve parameters, and even described the DAO as owner of the “Mask Ecosystem.” The live evidence is narrower. Snapshot has one direct strategy for canonical Ethereum MASK and a multichain strategy containing Polygon and BNB contracts. Only two configured member addresses can submit proposals. Its newest public proposal is an ecosystem-budget request created on 30 August 2022; it closed with proposal quorum set to zero. The public record shows real votes, but not continuing proposal activity through 2026.

That matters because Mask’s product estate kept changing. Three configured administrator addresses control the Snapshot space and strategies, and a signed off-chain result does not execute itself. The Polygon and BNB voting addresses are separately controlled proxy tokens, so Ethereum’s fixed-supply, no-admin design does not describe them. MASK holders have voting weight under the active settings; the reviewed sources do not turn the 2021 “owner” label into corporate equity, an automatic treasury command or legal ownership of every later MaskDAO product.

An extension became a product group

Mask reported more than 40,000 Chrome downloads in 2022, five Next.ID alpha partners and an expanding Firefly beta. It also moved beyond browser overlays: it maintained Mastodon instances and began operating Pawoo in December 2022. These actions made the “decentralized social” label broader than the original encrypted-post extension.

On 21 February 2025, MaskDAO announced that Next.ID, Web3.bio and Firefly would operate as spin-offs under a four-project structure. Firefly now has live web and mobile surfaces. The distinction is organizational as well as technical: MASK is one token, while each client, identity service, server and partner integration has its own code, operators and terms.

Lens made the ambition larger than the governance trail

On 20 January 2026, Lens Labs announced that Mask would steward Lens and that Lens Labs would shift from day-to-day product development to advisory. Mask’s own account added that Avara would continue in an advisory role. The two sources establish stewardship and advice, not a transfer of Lens title to MASK holders. Mask was taking responsibility around a mature social graph and chain rather than adding another plugin inside Twitter.

The canonical Ethereum token did not acquire new administrator code when that happened. MASK had also been used in a separate staking campaign: the only pool ended on 29 July 2024 after offering 700,000 RSS3 and 40,000 TON in rewards, and live state now shows staking disabled and withdrawals unlocked. Pool and reward-contract owners controlled settings and Merkle roots, so participation never created a fixed yield. Neither the token code nor the reviewed governance record establishes a dividend, redemption, company share or title to Lens. Operational reach widened much faster than the token’s encoded rights or its visible public governance trail.

Evidence and primary sources

What is Mask Network?

Mask Network is an open-source browser extension and a group of decentralized-social products maintained by Dimension and organized under the MaskDAO name. The extension inserts encrypted messaging, wallet, file, NFT, voting and trading interfaces into existing sites. MASK is the Ethereum ERC-20 used for voting weight and separate ecosystem programs. It is not the software itself, and the reviewed primary sources do not establish that a MASK token is a corporate share in the organizations operating those products.

What problem does Mask Network solve?

Mask’s original bet was that users would not abandon dominant social networks just to obtain privacy or Web3 tools. It therefore added an encrypted, user-controlled layer to the pages people already used. That choice lowered migration friction but made the product dependent on host-site interfaces: the team reported 23 emergency extension releases in 2022, largely because online functions, campaigns and Twitter DOM or API changes broke integrations.

How does Mask Network work?

The extension creates local Persona keys, encrypts a post with a symmetric key and wraps that key for selected recipients; content scripts then detect and render the result inside supported social pages. Separate plugins expose wallets, swaps, files, NFTs and votes. MASK itself is simpler: the canonical Ethereum constructor minted 100 million once, and that contract has no admin path. The Polygon and BNB contracts counted by Snapshot have separate proxy and mint controls, so Ethereum’s fixed-supply finding does not describe every voting address. Governance and the completed 2024 staking campaign run through external systems whose operators and rules matter independently of the Ethereum token code.

Key facts

  • Mask’s earliest documented version was operating by July 2019 with access-controlled encrypted posts on Twitter and Facebook.
  • The current official site lists X, Facebook, Instagram, Minds and Mirror.
  • The canonical Ethereum contract is 0x69af81e73A73B40adF4f3d4223Cd9b1ECE623074.
  • The constructor minted exactly 100 million MASK to the deployer on 2021-02-19.
  • The token is non-proxy and has no owner, mint, burn, pause, blacklist or holder-seizure function.
  • The launch set a 7% public sale—3% through the in-Twitter ITO and 4% through a Balancer LBP—plus a separate 1% airdrop. The sale stages ran from 22 to 26 February 2021; airdrop claims opened after the LBP.
  • The launch plan said every genesis token would be unlocked by month 36.
  • Snapshot uses one direct strategy for canonical Ethereum MASK 0x69af…3074 and one multichain strategy containing Polygon 0x2b9e…10c7 and BNB Chain 0x2ed9a5c8c13b93955103b9a7c167b67ef4d568a3. The BNB address is upgradeable and mintable, and Polygon is a child-token proxy; Ethereum’s fixed/no-admin finding does not apply to them.
  • The latest public masknetwork.eth proposal was created on 2022-08-30 and closed with proposal quorum zero. Only two configured member addresses could propose; three admin addresses could change the space.
  • MASK Stake’s only pool ended on 2024-07-29 after offering 700,000 RSS3 and 40,000 TON. Live state has staking disabled and withdrawals unlocked; separate owners control pool settings and reward roots.
  • The official wallet agreement says Mask cannot freeze, recover or reverse a self-custodied wallet.
  • Mask’s 2022 figures of 40,000+ Chrome downloads and five Next.ID alpha partners are attributed project reports.
  • Next.ID, Web3.bio and Firefly were announced as spin-offs under MaskDAO on 2025-02-21.
  • Lens Labs confirmed Mask as Lens steward on 2026-01-20 and said Lens Labs would shift from day-to-day development to advisory; Mask’s own account separately said Avara would continue as an adviser.

Frequently asked questions

What is MASK used for?

MASK transfers as an Ethereum ERC-20 and supplies voting weight under the configured Snapshot rules. It also entered a separate 2024 staking campaign for RSS3 and TON rewards, which has ended. Product access and third-party app terms remain separate.

Can the MASK team mint more tokens?

The canonical Ethereum contract cannot. It minted 100 million in its constructor and exposes no owner, mint, proxy-upgrade, pause or blacklist function.

Does one MASK still equal one governance vote?

The 2021 introduction described one MASK as one vote and called the DAO the ecosystem’s owner. Current Snapshot has one Ethereum strategy and one multichain strategy, but only its two configured members can propose. Its last public proposal was created on 30 August 2022 and closed with proposal quorum zero; three admins can change the space. The record establishes voting weight under those settings, not automatic execution or legal title to every MaskDAO product.

Is Mask Network a new social network?

Its original and still-visible product is an overlay: a browser extension injects encrypted posts and Web3 interfaces into existing social sites. The wider organization later added or operated separate products and networks.

Does staking MASK pay protocol revenue?

The only recorded MASK Stake pool was a 2024 campaign offering 700,000 RSS3 and 40,000 TON. It ended on 29 July 2024; live state shows staking disabled and withdrawals unlocked. Rewards depended on points, an owner-set Merkle root and a funded reward contract, so this was neither protocol revenue nor a permanent yield right.

What did Mask obtain from Lens?

Lens Labs said on 20 January 2026 that Mask would steward Lens while Lens Labs shifted from day-to-day product development to advisory. Mask’s same-day account said Avara would continue as an adviser. Neither announcement turns each MASK token into legal title to Lens.
