Newton changed its name faster than it changed who controlled the chain

AB preserved Newton's balances and much of its infrastructure while replacing the public story around them. The useful history lies in what did not automatically change: selected block producers, a managed reserve release, privileged bridges and no documented token vote or claim on the real-world assets the roadmap invokes.

Newton’s Community Economy project takes the AB name

Newton began in 2018 with a Community Economy thesis and built NewChain, NewPay and associated applications. On February 10, 2025 it announced the AB name. Exchanges changed NEW to AB without a general token migration, and NewPay later changed the displayed symbol. The chain history and balances continued; only stranded BEP2 NEW-09E required a distinct recovery transaction after Beacon Chain closed.

A 100-billion reserve was accelerated toward infrastructure

The rebrand paired a fixed 100-billion ceiling with a compressed release schedule. At February 2025 the published split was 1.18 billion burned, 42.25 billion already distributed and 56.57 billion reserved for infrastructure, scheduled through February 2026. Those rewards were described as support for nodes and maintenance, not as a permissionless staking contract available to every holder. The live chain remained Clique PoA while a separate PoSA v2 client developed.

Live blocks prove operation, while the documents expose the control boundary

AB Core produced three-second blocks into September 2026 and the Foundation's client repositories received 2026 changes. That is stronger evidence than a roadmap, but it does not measure active users or decentralization. The Foundation can shape AIP conclusions and disclosed supply actions; selected authorities finalize the current chain; bridges may mint and burn cross-chain forms; third parties operate cross-chain and commercial products. AB pays gas across this system. It does not grant a holder corporate ownership, protocol veto, fixed node income or title to an RWA.

The 56.57-billion allocation is scheduled to release linearly over 12 months for nodes, maintenance, security and development.

  3. 2025-02-10
    Newton announces the AB name

The project reframes itself around modular infrastructure, cross-chain links and RWA integration while preserving core assets.

  4. 2025-02-18
    Exchanges rename NEW to AB

Trading symbols and balances change without a general token migration.

  5. 2025-03-07
NewPay updates the display and BEP2 recovery opens

Wallet naming catches up while holders of stranded NEW-09E receive a separate cross-chain claim path.

    AIP-0 formalizes public proposals

Anyone may submit, the Foundation assigns numbers, and community discussion precedes a final conclusion without published token-vote execution rules.

What is AB?

AB is the renamed Newton Project asset, formerly ticker NEW. It is the native gas coin of AB Core and AB IoT and also has a BNB Smart Chain representation at `0x95034f653d5D161890836Ad2B6b8cc49D14e029a`. This identity excludes Newton Protocol's unrelated Ethereum token NEWT (`0xd0ec…285d`), which has a different issuer, supply and automation product.

AB Core is an EVM-compatible network with chain ID 36888. Its current documentation and client describe three-second blocks and Proof of Authority. AB pays transaction and smart-contract gas. The reviewed materials do not establish that ordinary AB holders can enter the current validator set by staking, delegate to validators, or execute protocol changes through token voting. The current whitepaper also denies equity, profit-sharing, ownership and governance rights.

What problem does AB solve?

Newton launched in 2018 around the broad promise that users should benefit from a “Community Economy.” Its older ecosystem joined NewChain, NewPay, NewMall and IoT-oriented services. In February 2025 the project renamed itself AB and shifted its public story toward modular chains, cross-chain connectivity and real-world assets. For most exchange and wallet balances this was a ticker change, not a new-token swap.

That continuity creates the real question. A new DAO label and AIP forum do not alone change consensus or legal rights. AB Core's live client uses a selected-authority validator model; AIP-0 provides open submission and discussion but gives the Foundation proposal-numbering responsibility and publishes no token vote or execution rule. AB Connect and commercial services are described as independent third-party operations, so their promises should not be confused with the base chain.

How does AB work?

AB Core charges native AB as gas and runs EVM contracts. Official docs list chain ID 36888, 18 decimals, a three-second target and 20 confirmations. The current `abcore` client says Clique PoA. A separate `abcore-v2` repository is developing Parlia PoSA and modern EVM support, but source development is not evidence that the live network already admits AB stakers or has activated that upgrade.

The stated maximum is 100 billion AB. In February 2025, documents allocated 1.18 billion as burned, 42.25 billion as community-distributed and 56.57 billion to infrastructure rewards, with the latter scheduled to unlock linearly through February 2026. The MiCA disclosure says the Foundation retains rights to release, burn and mint portions and that bridges can mint and burn, so current cross-chain totals must be reconciled across AB Core, AB IoT and BSC rather than inferred from one explorer.

AB Core was still producing blocks at this review: explorer block 14,609,865 carried timestamp `2026-09-04T16:29:57Z`, and Foundation repositories show 2026 client work. This confirms operation and development, not user demand. Bridge, wallet, payment and RWA activity can depend on third-party operators, contracts and legal eligibility that native AB ownership does not supply.

Key facts

  • Identity: AB, formerly Newton/NEW; unrelated to Newton Protocol's NEWT.
  • BSC AB contract: 0x95034f653d5D161890836Ad2B6b8cc49D14e029a.
  • AB Core mainnet: chain ID 36888, 18 decimals, three-second target blocks and 20-confirmation guidance.
  • Published current AB Core client uses Clique Proof of Authority; PoSA is visible in a separate v2 development repository.
  • Maximum stated supply: 100 billion AB across the ecosystem.
  • February 2025 allocation: 1.18B burned, 42.25B community and 56.57B infrastructure rewards.
  • NEW-to-AB was a rename for main balances; stranded BEP2 NEW-09E used a separate recovery process.
  • Current AB documents do not grant token voting, equity, profit-sharing or RWA ownership rights.

Frequently asked questions

Is AB the same as Newton Protocol's NEWT?

No. This CoinGecko page follows Newton Project's NEW, renamed AB, with native AB-chain forms and BSC contract 0x9503…029a. NEWT is a separate one-billion-supply Ethereum token issued for another automation protocol.

Did NEW holders receive a replacement token in 2025?

The ordinary change was a ticker and brand rename with balances unchanged, not a general contract migration. The exception was stranded BEP2 NEW-09E after BNB Beacon Chain shutdown, for which AB DAO published a separate recovery process.

Can the supply still be minted or moved by privileged parties?

The stated maximum is 100 billion, but the MiCA paper says the Foundation retains release, burn and mint powers over portions of supply and that bridges can mint and burn representations. Live totals require cross-chain reconciliation.

Can any AB holder stake to become a validator?

No public mechanism was verified for the live Clique PoA chain. Infrastructure rewards may fund nodes, and a PoSA v2 client is in development, but that does not establish current permissionless AB staking, delegation, yield or slashing terms.

Does AB give binding DAO voting rights?

The AIP process accepts public submissions and discussion, yet publishes no token-weighted quorum or onchain execution rule. The current whitepaper expressly says AB has no governance function, so the DAO label should not be read as a legal or executable vote right.

Does AB give ownership of real-world assets?

No. RWA integration is an application theme. The official disclosures deny equity, ownership, dividends and profit claims; rights in a specific tokenized asset would need its own issuer and legal contract.
