pathUSD connects dollar tokens without asking everyone to hold it

Tempo’s pathUSD has an unusual ambition for a market-listed token: a payment can use it while neither customer nor merchant keeps it. Understanding that small role means separating the exchange route, the mainnet dollar asset and the issuer behind it.

Tempo built a payment network before opening the production ledger

Tempo opened its public testnet on December 9, 2025, presenting stablecoin-paid fees and a built-in exchange as parts of a payment system. The production milestone followed on March 18, 2026, when mainnet opened through public RPC endpoints. These are different stages of the network, not evidence that test balances acquired dollar backing.

Current documentation identifies pathUSD as the first TIP-20 token predeployed at genesis. Mainnet uses chain ID 4217; Moderato testnet uses 42431. Both place pathUSD at 0x20c0000000000000000000000000000000000000. A matching address is therefore insufficient identification: the network determines whether a balance is the production asset or faucet test money.

A dollar token designed to be passed through

On Tempo’s native exchange, each dollar token chooses a quote token against which it trades. Those relationships form a connected tree rather than requiring a market for every possible pair. pathUSD supplies one optional common connection. In Tempo’s example, liquidity in USDX/pathUSD and USDY/pathUSD lets a customer pay USDX while a merchant receives USDY in one atomic transaction.

The customer and merchant need not hold pathUSD directly in that example. It can also be the fallback fee token when a user or validator has not specified one, but other eligible stablecoins can pay fees. Tempo has no native gas token. The practical distinction is that network activity and demand to keep a pathUSD balance are different things; routing still needs usable market liquidity.

The route ends at Bridge when tokens are issued or redeemed

Tempo names Bridge as pathUSD’s issuer and states that high-quality dollar-denominated reserves back it 1:1. The documented entry route is a USDC.e deposit, and the exit route is redemption to USDC through Bridge. Those are the project’s issuance descriptions, distinct from the price and available liquidity on a secondary market.

Bridge’s general stablecoin FAQ describes reserve holdings and promises quarterly transparency reports. This review did not locate a pathUSD-specific reserve statement or a named custodian allocation. Bridge Building Inc’s general terms require eligible customer status for direct purchase or redemption and deny ownership of reserve assets; however, the reviewed pathUSD page does not identify the precise Bridge legal entity or customer agreement. Applying every BBI clause to pathUSD as an established contract would go beyond that evidence.

Neutral routing still has an operator

TIP-20 is implemented within Tempo’s protocol. Its specification gives assigned roles authority to issue, pause, unpause and burn balances blocked by a transfer policy. Live state on September 5, 2026 showed pathUSD unpaused, with a 100 million supply cap and custom TIP-403 policy 2. The registry identified policy 2 as a blacklist administered by 0x251d…5246; its membership and the token’s complete current role roster were not established.

pathUSD consequently connects two different systems: the exchange can route dollars automatically, while issuance and redemption rely on Bridge’s service and applicable terms. Its purpose becomes clearer when those roles are kept visible. Successful use would mean a payment reaches the recipient’s preferred token, sometimes passing through pathUSD without asking either person to keep it.

What is pathUSD?

pathUSD is a dollar-denominated TIP-20 stablecoin on Tempo Mainnet, chain ID 4217. Tempo identifies Bridge as its issuer and describes 1:1 backing by high-quality dollar reserves. The mainnet contract is 0x20c0000000000000000000000000000000000000, with six decimals.

Its distinctive job is to connect other stablecoins on Tempo’s built-in exchange. It can also serve as a fallback fee token. Users may choose other eligible dollar tokens, so activity on Tempo does not mechanically require everyone to buy or retain pathUSD.

What problem does pathUSD solve?

A customer may hold one dollar token while a merchant wants another. Requiring every issuer to maintain a liquid market against every other issuer multiplies trading pairs and divides available liquidity. Tempo groups quote-token relationships into a connected tree, giving the exchange a route between assets.

pathUSD offers a common pairing option within that design. Tempo describes this as issuer neutrality, but that is a statement about exchange architecture: the reserves and issuance still depend on Bridge. Optional use does not make the asset issuerless.

How does pathUSD work?

Market makers can supply USDX/pathUSD and USDY/pathUSD markets. A payment then moves from USDX through pathUSD into USDY in one atomic transaction. In that example the customer and merchant do not need to hold pathUSD directly. Other connected quote tokens can provide different routes.

Tempo documents deposits of USDC.e to mint pathUSD and redemption back to USDC through Bridge. That service route is separate from selling into DEX liquidity. TIP-20 also supplies administrator-assigned issuance, pause and transfer-policy powers. The live token was unpaused and capped at 100 million units. It referenced TIP-403 policy 2, a blacklist policy administered by 0x251d…5246. Historical role events identify a later issuer grant, but the full current role roster and the blacklist membership were not established.

Key facts

  • Tempo Mainnet launched on March 18, 2026; its chain ID is 4217.
  • The production pathUSD address is 0x20c0000000000000000000000000000000000000; name and symbol are pathUSD and decimals are 6.
  • Moderato testnet uses chain ID 42431 and the same address, but faucet balances are not mainnet funds.
  • Tempo describes Bridge as issuer, 1:1 dollar reserve backing, USDC.e mint deposits and USDC redemption.
  • pathUSD is an optional quote token and fallback fee token; Tempo has no native gas token.
  • On September 5, 2026, pathUSD was unpaused, capped at 100 million units and attached to custom blacklist policy 2; the full role and blacklist membership remained unresolved.

Frequently asked questions

Is faucet pathUSD worth one production dollar?

No. The same predeploy address exists on separate chains. Moderato faucet balances are development assets and cannot be treated as the mainnet token.

Must I buy pathUSD to use Tempo?

No. Tempo supports eligible dollar stablecoins for fees and lets tokens choose other quote tokens. pathUSD can provide routing or a fallback fee asset without becoming a balance every user must keep.

Can every wallet redeem directly for bank dollars?

Tempo documents a Bridge route back to USDC. That does not establish unconditional bank-dollar redemption for every wallet. Bridge Building Inc’s general terms require eligible user onboarding, but the exact legal entity and account terms applying to pathUSD were not independently resolved.

Are pathUSD reserves independently attested?

Tempo states 1:1 reserve backing. Bridge’s general FAQ promises quarterly reports, but a pathUSD-specific reserve report and custodian allocation were not located in this review. The promise is not a completed attestation.

Can administrators restrict pathUSD?

TIP-20 supports pausing, role assignment and transfer policies. At review, pathUSD was unpaused and used custom policy 2, which TIP-403 identified as a blacklist administered by 0x251d…5246. Its administrator can change the token policy, and the policy administrator can change the blacklist; the complete role and blocked-address rosters were not established.
