Shiba Inu: the half-supply wager that became a multi-token network

Ryoshi tried to launch SHIB without a conventional treasury, then handed the experiment an extraordinary weakness: roughly half the supply sat with Vitalik Buterin. What Buterin did in May 2021 changed the distribution; what builders added afterward changed what the name Shiba Inu meant.

A fair-launch claim with one enormous exception

Ryoshi's August 2, 2020 note presented SHIB as an experiment in spontaneous community building. The pseudonymous organizer said contributors kept no team-token bucket and would have to buy like anyone else. Roughly half the one-quadrillion supply was tied to Uniswap distribution, while roughly half was placed in Vitalik Buterin's wallet.

That was not a burn. Ryoshi explicitly described Buterin as the experiment's vulnerable point. The distribution removed a visible founder treasury but gave an outsider unilateral control over an immense liquid balance. Buterin had not created SHIB, and the transfer itself did not prove endorsement.

Buterin uses the power Ryoshi gave him

On May 12, 2021, Buterin transferred about 50.694 trillion SHIB to the India Covid-Crypto Relief Fund. Four days later he sent about 410.242 trillion SHIB to the burn address 0xdead...069. These were decisions he made as a holder, rather than distributions scheduled by the token contract.

The second transaction sent tokens to an address used to remove them from circulation; it did not call SHIB’s burn function. The balance therefore remains in totalSupply. That distinction explains why the contract still reports close to one quadrillion units while circulating-supply estimates are much lower.

ShibaSwap divides the work among tokens

ShibaSwap and BONE launched on July 7, 2021. The exchange added pools and staking, while BONE supplied rewards and governance. LEASH, originally conceived with a Dogecoin-linked rebase, became a scarce access and governance asset. SHIB remained the broad community token and recognizable face.

That split matters. Buying SHIB does not buy BONE gas, LEASH privileges, exchange revenue or a legal interest in the developers' work. The family branding connects the products; separate contracts define the rights.

Shibarium turns a meme into infrastructure

Shibarium launched in August 2023 as an EVM-compatible Ethereum Layer 2. Its official network settings use chain ID 109 and BONE as gas. Validators and delegators stake BONE, while SHIB reaches Shibarium applications through token and bridge contracts.

Current documentation also lists ShibaSwap v1 and v2, Shib DAO, the bridge and beta Bury 2.0. This is a larger product surface than the original ERC-20, so its trust assumptions are larger too. A SHIB holder can verify the simple token code and still face separate pool, bridge, signer or application risk.

The ecosystem learns that no owner is not no control

In August 2025 a surviving authorized path in legacy LEASH code triggered a rebase and increased supply, contradicting the simple fixed-supply story. The project proposed a replacement migration, but this review does not treat that process as completed without a final primary notice and canonical contract.

On September 12, 2025, unauthorized validator power pushed malicious proofs through the Shibarium bridge. Developers restricted bridge operations, rotated signers and moved control toward multiparty hardware custody. Neither incident changed SHIB's original contract, but both showed where control migrated as the project grew beyond it.

What is Shiba Inu?

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an ERC-20 token launched on Ethereum in 2020 by the pseudonymous Ryoshi. Its origin was intentionally social: the founder described an experiment in spontaneous community building, placed roughly half the supply into Uniswap liquidity and made Vitalik Buterin the holder of roughly the other half. Buterin later donated about 50.694 trillion SHIB and sent about 410.242 trillion to an inaccessible address.

SHIB is now the foundation and public face of a wider product family. It is distinct from BONE, Shibarium's gas, validator-staking and principal governance token, and from LEASH, whose present documentation assigns limited-supply premium-governance functions. ShibaSwap, Shibarium, its bridge and DAO interfaces are products with their own contracts and operators; owning SHIB is not ownership of those products or a general claim on their fees.

What problem does Shiba Inu solve?

The 2020 experiment asked whether a token could distribute without a conventional treasury, paid promotion or visible chief executive. That removed an ordinary team allocation, but it created a different problem: one outside person held an enormous liquid balance. Buterin's 2021 choices resolved much of that concentration through charity and an inaccessible address, not through SHIB's monetary code.

The later ecosystem tried to give the community places to trade, stake, govern and build more cheaply than on Ethereum mainnet. ShibaSwap and Shibarium answer those product needs. They also add dependencies that the plain SHIB contract does not have: liquidity pools, bridges, validator signers, governance interfaces and other tokens with different control paths.

How does Shiba Inu work?

The Ethereum SHIB contract created its supply once in the constructor. Holders can transfer, approve spending and burn their own tokens; the verified code has no owner-only mint, blacklist or upgrade function. A transfer to a burn address makes tokens practically inaccessible but, unlike calling burn(), does not subtract them from totalSupply. That is why contract supply and market-circulating estimates differ.

Shibarium is a separate EVM-compatible Layer 2 identified by chain ID 109. BONE pays its gas and is staked by validators and delegators. SHIB, LEASH and other supported assets reach applications through token contracts and bridge routes. Current docs also list ShibaSwap v1 and concentrated-liquidity v2, Bury 2.0 in beta, and token-specific Doggy DAOs. Each surface requires its own address and risk check.

Key facts

  • Origin: Ryoshi published the launch account on 2020-08-02 and remained pseudonymous; the account claims no retained team-token bucket.
  • Initial design: one quadrillion SHIB was created, with roughly half tied to Uniswap distribution and roughly half placed under Vitalik Buterin's control.
  • Donation: 50,693,552,078,053.777804071047582466 SHIB moved to the India Covid-Crypto Relief Fund on 2021-05-12.
  • Burn-address transfer: 410,241,996,771,871.894771826174755464 SHIB moved to 0xdead...069 on 2021-05-16; those units remain in totalSupply.
  • Token split: SHIB is the ecosystem's foundation/community token; BONE handles Shibarium gas, validator staking and principal governance; LEASH is a separate premium-governance token with a troubled legacy rebase design.
  • Shibarium: current official settings are chain ID 109, RPC https://rpc.shibarium.shib.io and currency symbol BONE.
  • Canonical Ethereum SHIB: 0x95aD61b0a150d79219dCF64E1E6Cc01f0B64C4cE, 18 decimals, non-upgradeable verified TokenMint ERC-20 code.
  • Current products include ShibaSwap v1/v2, Shibarium, bridge, Shib DAO and beta Bury 2.0; they do not turn SHIB into equity or guarantee yield.

Frequently asked questions

Did Vitalik Buterin create or endorse SHIB?

No evidence here supports either claim. Ryoshi's own account says the project sent him the tokens and openly called his control a vulnerable point. Buterin later disposed of most of that balance.

How much SHIB did Buterin donate and send to a burn address?

The May 12, 2021 donation was 50,693,552,078,053.777804071047582466 SHIB. On May 16 he transferred 410,241,996,771,871.894771826174755464 SHIB to an inaccessible address.

Why is totalSupply still near one quadrillion?

The largest 2021 disposal was a transfer to a burn address, not a call to SHIB's burn function. The tokens are inaccessible but remain counted by the ERC-20 totalSupply method.

Does SHIB pay Shibarium gas?

No. Current official network settings identify BONE as Shibarium's currency and gas token. SHIB can be bridged and used in applications, but it is not native gas.

Are SHIB, BONE and LEASH interchangeable?

No. They are separate contracts and balances. Current docs give them different governance, staking, gas and access roles.

Is LEASH supply fixed?

That description became unsafe after a legacy authorized rebase path increased supply in August 2025. A replacement migration was proposed, but users must verify its current contract and completion status from official notices.

Who controls SHIB?

The original SHIB token has no owner-only mint, freeze or upgrade path in verified code. The wider ecosystem still depends on developers, DAO interfaces, bridge signers, validators and separately administered contracts.

Does staking SHIB guarantee rewards or voting power?

No. Rewards and voting depend on the specific current product and contract. Bury 2.0 is documented as beta, and no token position guarantees dollar value or protocol income.
