A .bnb registrar became a broader identity layer, but its powers never merged into one token

SPACE ID’s history is a sequence of widening labels: first .bnb names, then a multichain marketplace, and now Payment ID. The expansion made the product easier to describe as one identity network, yet its rights remain split among name owners, ID voters, treasury signers and token-contract administrators.

A BNB Chain name becomes the first wedge

In July 2022, BNB Chain introduced SPACE ID as a service intended to replace long wallet strings with .bnb names. The early pitch combined registration, resolution and a tradable name asset. It addressed a visible interface problem before attempting the larger promise of a portable identity.

The .bnb service launched in September. Binance Research later reported 440,000 registrations and 250,000 unique holders during its first six months; those are dated project-supplied figures, not a live adoption count. What mattered strategically was that the registrar had become a working distribution channel.

The team folds .arb into a multichain identity story

In February 2023, SPACE ID incorporated .arb Name Service and rebranded it as the platform’s .arb offering. The move shifted the product from one BNB Chain namespace toward an aggregator where users could discover, register, trade and manage names from several systems.

A name remains an asset inside its own registry. The platform can present many namespaces together and its SDK can resolve them, but a .bnb NFT does not become an ID balance and an ID holder does not automatically own a name. This separation is the foundation for reading everything that followed.

The 2023 token sale prices a governance layer into the platform

The published plan created a two-billion-ID allocation: 5% Launchpad, 7% advisers, 8% strategic sale, 20% seed, 15% core team, 10% ecosystem, 13% marketing, 12% foundation and 10% community airdrop. Investor and team categories carried one-year cliffs, while ecosystem, marketing, foundation and airdrop pools followed different unlock schedules.

Season 1 connected the token launch to early users. Snapshots were taken on March 10, and claims ran from March 22 to April 22, 2023. Roughly 47.6 million ID was offered to about 271,000 eligible .bnb and .arb holder addresses. Eligibility rewarded prior naming activity; it did not convert those names into token-backed legal claims.

DAO voting ends at a human execution boundary

SPACE ID’s DAO rules route proposals through a forum and Snapshot. A vote needs at least 50% support and an aggregate participation quorum of five million ID; that figure is not a minimum balance for one proposer. The document then assigns implementation to the core team and treasury authorization to elected multisig signers. The vote therefore signals a decision without automatically calling the token or treasury contracts.

The revenue policy says half of platform net revenue should buy and burn ID and half should go to the treasury. A participant in the IDP3 forum thread reported one completed purchase and burn: $1,031,115.40 spent for 3,107,377.8 ID. That transaction supports the first reported execution, not a standing redemption right or proof that every future period was executed.

The same address hides different administrators on two chains

ID was deployed at 0x2dfF88A56767223A5529eA5960Da7A3F5f766406 on both Ethereum and BNB Chain. The verified Ethereum code supplies burn, permit, pause, mint and role-management functions. It contains no coded two-billion cap. On September 5, 2026, each deployment had one default administrator, no minter, no pauser and paused=false.

Empty operational roles reduce immediate mint and pause authority, but they do not erase it: a default administrator can grant the roles again. The Ethereum administrator was 0x062a7c8975d6d8a4ad14e05e87affb9ecb9ddca6 and the BNB Chain administrator was 0x9c28a2483901018216282216bc47cb699ca2d57f. DAO documents reviewed here do not show Snapshot votes automatically controlling either account.

Payment ID extends the product without changing token rights

The current product adds Payment ID, which maps a readable form such as user@provider to addresses on different systems. Its documents describe a registry, resolver, controller and email-based authentication. That can reduce payment-address friction, but the credential is a separate NFT-style record; buying fungible ID does not register one.

SPACE ID’s public materials name Tia as CEO and Arton as head of community in a 2023 governance nomination, but they do not consistently identify the founders. The same evidence boundary applies to holders: ID can support the published vote and benefit programs, but it is not equity, ownership of SPACE ID, a treasury share, a specific domain or a guarantee of platform revenue.

Evidence and primary sources

What is SPACE ID?

SPACE ID is a naming platform that helps users register, resolve, manage and trade blockchain names. It began with .bnb on BNB Chain and later aggregated other namespaces. ID is a separate 18-decimal ERC-20 deployed on Ethereum and BNB Chain at 0x2dfF88A56767223A5529eA5960Da7A3F5f766406; Payment ID is another, NFT-style credential rather than a balance of ID.

What problem does SPACE ID solve?

Wallet addresses are hard to recognize and one namespace rarely follows a user across every chain or application. SPACE ID tries to provide a common discovery and resolution layer, then extends the same human-readable idea to payment identifiers. The hard boundary is institutional: a name owner controls a record, ID voters signal DAO choices, multisig signers spend treasury funds, and token administrators can assign contract roles.

How does SPACE ID work?

Registrars create name records or NFTs and resolvers map labels to addresses. The current platform aggregates registration, management and secondary trading, while its API and SDK expose resolution to applications. ID can be staked for program benefits and used in the published Snapshot process. Proposals that pass still require core-team execution and treasury multisig approval. The two ID contracts currently have no minter or pauser, yet their sole administrators can grant those roles.

Key facts

  • `.bnb` launched in September 2022; .arb joined the platform in February 2023.
  • ID contract on Ethereum and BNB Chain: 0x2dfF88A56767223A5529eA5960Da7A3F5f766406; the deployments are separate despite sharing an address.
  • The published maximum allocation is 2,000,000,000 ID, but the verified code does not enforce that cap.
  • Season 1 claims ran from 2023-03-22 through 2023-04-22 after a 2023-03-10 snapshot.
  • On 2026-09-05, each chain had one administrator and no current minter or pauser; both contracts were unpaused.
  • The official supply endpoint returned 1,994,841,761.51664 ID on 2026-09-05.
  • A DAO vote needs at least 50% support and an aggregate 5,000,000-ID participation quorum, not a 5,000,000-ID proposer balance; human execution follows.
  • The first IDP3 update reported $1,031,115.40 spent to buy and burn 3,107,377.8 ID.
  • Payment ID is a separate identifier and does not turn ID balances into payment accounts.
  • A 2023 governance nomination record identifies Tia as CEO and Arton as head of community, but the public materials reviewed do not consistently establish the founders.

Frequently asked questions

Is ID the same thing as a .bnb or other blockchain name?

No. A name is a distinct record or NFT in its naming system. ID is a fungible governance and utility token; holding it does not give ownership of a particular name.

Why does ID have the same contract address on two chains?

SPACE ID deployed separate contracts at the same hexadecimal address on Ethereum and BNB Chain. Balances and administrators are chain-specific, so the address alone does not make them one ledger.

Can more than two billion ID be minted?

The official allocation calls two billion the maximum. The reviewed code has no hard cap: an administrator can grant MINTER_ROLE and that account can mint. No minter held the role on either chain on 2026-09-05.

Does an ID vote execute automatically?

No. The published process uses forum discussion and Snapshot. After a passing vote, the core team implements the decision and elected multisig signers authorize treasury funding.

Does the revenue-buyback policy give holders a revenue share?

No. The DAO page describes a policy to direct half of platform net revenue to buy and burn ID and half to the treasury. It does not create a redemption, dividend or ownership claim.

What did the first airdrop distribute?

The published Season 1 plan made roughly 47.6 million ID claimable by about 271,000 eligible .bnb and .arb holder addresses during the March–April 2023 window.

Is Payment ID an ID-token wallet?

No. Payment ID is a separately registered identifier that resolves a readable label to payment addresses. Its registry, controller and authentication rules are distinct from the ID ERC-20.
