WEMIX: A Game Token Recast as a Governed Layer-1 Ecosystem

WEMIX is not only a game-economy token. Wemade repositioned a 2020 gaming-platform asset around WEMIX3.0, an EVM-compatible chain whose real operating question is how much authority remains with its 40-node council and protocol governance. Its history also includes a Korean exchange dispute over circulation disclosures, making supply and control claims central to understanding the token.

A gaming token becomes a chain

WEMIX began in 2020 as Wemade's gaming-platform token. The WEMIX3.0 whitepaper describes the August 2021 release of MIR4 to more than 170 countries as a defining WEMIX2.0 moment and an early example of blockchain tokenomics in a commercially successful MMORPG.

The current project is broader than that original promise. WEMIX3.0 presents itself as an EVM-compatible public chain supporting games, DAOs, NFTs and DeFi, while WEMIX PLAY remains the most visible user-facing gaming surface. Historical game-token utility should therefore be separated from the current native-coin role.

The 2022 circulation dispute

In November 2022, DAXA—an alliance of Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and Gopax—announced it would terminate WEMIX transaction support. Yonhap reported Wemade's plan to take legal action.

A Seoul Central District Court rejected Wemade's injunction request in December 2022. The Korea Herald reported that DAXA cited discrepancies between the planned number of tokens in circulation and the actual market circulation. This is a historical dispute and not proof that every current supply figure is wrong, but it explains why WEMIX supply disclosures and reserve movements deserve scrutiny.

What the token represents now

The whitepaper calls WEMIX the native coin and primary medium of exchange and payment of WEMIX3.0. The chain uses SPoA, with 40 authority members/Node Council Partners, and PMR is distributed according to protocol phases. The stated 590 million cap follows the Brioche hard fork; minting halves over block cycles and is intended to stop at the cap.

Holding WEMIX is not documented as a claim on Wemade equity, project revenue or a guaranteed redemption. Governance power is concentrated in the authority model: proposals pass with more than half of authority votes, and governance can alter parameters including block time, gas settings, reward distribution and the governance-contract address. The reviewed official material does not prove a general holder freeze or blacklist function, so that control question remains contract-specific and should be independently checked before relying on it.

Live services versus the roadmap

The current official site links WEMIX PLAY, WEMIX STAKE, WEMIX.FI and Wepublic, while WEMIX documentation names PLAY, NILE and decentralized finance as core services. The WEMIX PLAY tokens page exposes swap and pool interfaces, but its rendered metrics were empty or zero during review; interface availability should not be read as proof of liquidity or yield.

The whitepaper's Phase 3 promises an open, voluntary validator model and a transition toward WEMIX4.0, but explicitly leaves its schedule to be determined. It is a roadmap, not a current description of validator decentralization.

Evidence and primary sources

What is WEMIX?

WEMIX is the native coin of WEMIX3.0, an EVM-compatible public blockchain operated by Wemade. It functions as the network's medium of exchange and payment and is used across services such as WEMIX PLAY, staking, NILE and WEMIX.FI. The project began as a gaming-platform token in 2020, before the WEMIX3.0 expansion into a broader on-chain ecosystem.

What problem does WEMIX solve?

The original problem was how to connect games and player economies to blockchain infrastructure; the 2021 MIR4 launch made that model globally visible. The current problem statement is broader: WEMIX3.0 presents itself as a service-oriented chain for games, DAOs, NFTs and DeFi, with an EVM environment and a stablecoin layer intended to reduce the friction of volatile token prices. These are project-described objectives, not guarantees of adoption or value.

How does WEMIX work?

WEMIX3.0 uses an EVM-compatible architecture and stake-based Proof of Authority (SPoA). A 40-member Node Council Partner/“WONDERS” authority set participates in block production and governance. WEMIX is minted as a Permanent Minting Reward (PMR) per block under a halving schedule until the stated 590 million maximum supply; transaction fees can also be burned under the protocol design. Authority governance can change system variables, including reward distribution, gas parameters, block time and the governance-contract address, and the whitepaper says a protocol hard fork can follow an off-chain council agreement. The reviewed sources do not establish a blacklist or account-freeze function for WEMIX, so those controls should be treated as unverified rather than assumed absent.

Key facts

  • WEMIX launched in 2020 as Wemade's gaming-platform token, according to independent reporting.
  • MIR4 was published on the WEMIX platform in August 2021 across more than 170 countries, according to the WEMIX3.0 whitepaper.
  • WEMIX3.0 is an EVM-compatible public chain using stake-based Proof of Authority and a 40-authority-node model.
  • The whitepaper states a 590 million WEMIX maximum supply after the Brioche hard fork and describes PMR halving in block cycles.
  • The whitepaper allocates PMR among authorities, stakers, ecosystem and maintenance in Phase 1/2 schedules; Phase 3 allocation is stated as to be determined.
  • The 2022 Korean exchange dispute concerned discrepancies between planned and actual circulation; a Seoul court denied Wemix's injunction against delisting.
  • WEMIX's official notice records a WEMIX/USD Kraken listing dated July 7, 2026 UTC.
  • The WEMIX3.0 roadmap describes an eventual open validator/PoS Phase 3 and WEMIX4.0, but gives no schedule; it must not be described as completed.

Frequently asked questions

Is WEMIX the same project as WEMIX3.0?

Yes. WEMIX is the native coin used by the current WEMIX3.0 chain. Earlier WEMIX gaming-platform and Klaytn-era references describe historical stages or legacy balances, not a different current canonical project.

What rights does holding WEMIX provide?

The documented utility is network payment, ecosystem use and, where supported, staking or delegation. Authority governance is controlled by the 40 Node Council Partners; ordinary ownership is not documented as a legal equity, revenue, redemption or claim on Wemade assets.

Can WEMIX holders vote on the chain?

The whitepaper describes on-chain governance primarily through authority members. Staking and delegated staking can affect authority rewards and the roadmap proposes broader participation, but the reviewed material does not establish unrestricted direct voting rights for every spot holder.

What is WEMIX's maximum supply?

The WEMIX3.0 whitepaper states that the Brioche hard fork capped maximum supply at 590 million WEMIX. PMR continues through halving cycles and is intended to cease when that maximum is reached; live circulating figures change and should be checked in the official explorer.

What products are live today?

The official site currently links WEMIX PLAY, WEMIX STAKE, WEMIX.FI and Wepublic; the documentation identifies PLAY, NILE and decentralized financial services as core WEMIX3.0 services. The separate WEMIX4.0 open-validator design remains roadmap material with no stated schedule.

Does WEMIX have mint, freeze or upgrade risk?

PMR minting is an explicit protocol feature. Governance can change system variables and the governance-contract address, and the whitepaper describes hard-fork authority through council agreement. The reviewed sources do not provide enough evidence to confirm or deny a WEMIX account blacklist or freeze function.
