What is Immutable?

IMX is the fungible Ethereum token used across the Immutable ecosystem. The token's canonical Ethereum contract is 0xf57e7e7c23978c3caec3c3548e3d615c346e79ff, and Etherscan identifies it as an 18-decimal ERC-20 with a 2,000,000,000-token cap.

The name can be confusing because the project moved from Immutable X to a broader Immutable platform. Immutable's current documentation says Immutable X was its first rollup, merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026, and is now deprecated. The live product surface is Immutable's gaming growth platform and its Chain, Passport, and Play products; Immutable Chain's mainnet network configuration is named Immutable zkEVM (chain ID 13371). Old Immutable X marketplace and write interfaces should not be treated as current.

What problem does Immutable solve?

Immutable X originally addressed Ethereum NFT and gaming infrastructure constraints: expensive or slow on-chain interactions, difficult user onboarding, and the need for a trading and asset layer suitable for games. Its StarkEx-based rollup reduced execution and trading friction, but that historical product is no longer the project's active interface.

The current Immutable platform addresses game-studio distribution, player identity, engagement, attribution, digital assets, and chain infrastructure. Immutable's docs describe products for collecting and activating player profiles, measuring campaigns, authentication and embedded wallets, player discovery, and EVM-compatible game assets. These are documented product claims; they do not imply that every roadmap or partner game is live.

How does Immutable work?

IMX is an Ethereum ERC-20 and is also documented as the native currency for Immutable zkEVM, whose current network configuration lists IMX with 18 decimals. Immutable's token page states that 20% of protocol fees must be paid in IMX, that this fee share is reserved for active ecosystem-participant rewards, and that staking can qualify users for those rewards. It also describes Snapshot-based ecosystem governance. Those are stated utility and participation mechanisms, not a promise of dividends, revenue ownership, or a legally enforceable profit share.

The verified Ethereum token ABI exposes AccessControl roles, including DEFAULT_ADMIN_ROLE and MINTER_ROLE, plus grantRole, revokeRole, mint, and a cap check. The contract page shows no pause, blacklist, burn, or proxy-upgrade function in the verified ABI. The 2 billion cap is a contract limit, while the current holders, role assignments, and balances are state that must be checked on-chain. Immutable X's separate migration system used bridge contracts and permissioned operators during the 2026 sunset; bridge administration is not the same as ordinary IMX holder control.

Key facts

  • Canonical candidate identity: Immutable (IMX), formerly and technically still represented by the Immutable X token on Ethereum.
  • Ethereum token contract: 0xF57e7e7C23978C3cAEC3C3548E3D615c346e79fF; verified ERC-20 with 18 decimals.
  • Maximum supply is 2,000,000,000 IMX. The published allocation is 51.72% ecosystem development, 25% project development, 13.86% public sale, 5.42% private sale, and 4% foundation.
  • The published ecosystem and project-development vesting schedules list 31 October 2025 as their end date; unlocked supply is not the same as circulating supply.
  • Immutable X was a StarkEx-based NFT rollup built with StarkWare; Immutable says it merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026 and its sequencer no longer processes new transactions.
  • Immutable's current docs present a gaming platform with Audience, Attribution, Chain, Passport, and Play products. Immutable Chain's mainnet network configuration is named Immutable zkEVM (chain ID 13371), with IMX as its currency.
  • The project states that IMX supports protocol-fee payment, staking rewards, Snapshot governance, and Immutable zkEVM gas; these statements do not establish legal equity, redemption, or revenue-sharing rights.
  • The verified IMX ABI includes role-controlled minting subject to the cap and role administration. It does not expose pause, freeze, blacklist, burn, or proxy-upgrade functions; current role ownership still requires an on-chain check.

Frequently asked questions

Are Immutable X and Immutable (IMX) the same project?

They are part of the same public project and token lineage, but the product identity changed. Immutable says Immutable X was its first rollup, merged into Immutable Chain in early 2026; the IMX ERC-20 contract and ticker remain the canonical token references.

What is IMX used for today?

Immutable's token materials describe IMX for protocol-fee payment, staking-reward eligibility, Snapshot ecosystem governance, and gas on Immutable zkEVM, the network name used for Immutable Chain's mainnet (chain ID 13371). The current docs separately present Immutable's Chain, Passport, Play, and game-growth products.

Does holding IMX give legal ownership or a share of Immutable's profits?

The reviewed materials describe utility, staking rewards, and ecosystem voting. They do not establish that ordinary IMX is equity, a claim on company assets, a redemption right, or a legally enforceable share of revenue or profits.

What is IMX's maximum supply and vesting status?

The verified Ethereum contract and the official tokenomics page state a 2,000,000,000 IMX cap. The published allocation table lists the ecosystem and project-development unlock schedules as ending 31 October 2025; actual circulating balances and account-level holdings remain on-chain questions.

Can the IMX contract be minted, frozen, or upgraded?

The verified ABI exposes a MINTER_ROLE, role administration, mint, and a hard cap. It does not expose pause, blacklist, burn, or proxy-upgrade functions. Current role members and whether any minter capacity remains must be verified from live contract state; the separate Immutable X migration bridge had its own administrative and timelock controls.
