NPC put one meme in two markets

The grey NPC face was already a familiar internet meme before the token appeared. In July 2023, an unidentified project team did something more specific than print another ticker: it placed 8,050,126,520 identical meme units in an ERC-1155 contract and the same number of ERC-20 units in a paired vault, then let users decide which representation to hold.

An anonymous 2018 caricature arrives without its creator

NPC Wojak spread through 4chan and social platforms in September 2018 as a blank-faced insult about scripted thinking and group conformity. Its exact authorship is unresolved. Five years later, Non-Playable Coin adopted the image and the motto “I support the current coin.” The current site makes a boundary the earlier copy often missed: the token is not affiliated with the meme’s creator.

The project also publishes no founding team. That absence matters because a website, contracts and social accounts still require operators, but it does not justify inventing names or assigning the token rights against an unidentified company. The verifiable story begins with the deployed pair and its code.

A population number becomes two matching inventories

NPC dates its launch to 29 July 2023. The site says 8,050,126,520 represented the human population that day. Both Ethereum constructors hard-code that count: the ERC-1155 minted token id 1 to its deployer, while the ERC-20 minted 8,050,126,520 tokens with 18 decimals to the ERC-20 contract itself.

“Backed 1:1” here describes the wrapper’s exchange of the ERC-20 and ERC-1155 units held in its vault; it is not an external reserve guaranteeing market price. The ERC-1155 contract records balances, while transfers move units between the wrapper and users. Nor are the NFT units individually unique ERC-721 artworks: they are interchangeable quantities of a single ERC-1155 id sharing a metadata path.

Transform and Respawn run opposite to the usual guess

The code settles the direction. Transform first pulls amount units of ERC-1155 id 1 from the caller, then sends amount multiplied by 10^18 ERC-20 base units out of the vault. Respawn pulls those whole ERC-20 units back and releases the same amount of ERC-1155. Both require at least one whole unit.

No token is minted or burned during conversion, so the combined accounting depends on the two vault balances and successful cross-contract transfers. The live app gives this old pair a usable interface. A failed interface does not remove the public functions, but gas, approvals and the user’s chosen network still determine whether a transaction succeeds.

Renounced coin logic leaves media and bridges outside the claim

The Ethereum ERC-20 owner currently resolves to the zero address. Its short NPC-specific code has no tax setter, pause, blacklist or mint after construction. The paired ERC-1155 is different: it minted its fixed supply once, yet a nonzero owner retains setURI and can change where token metadata resolves. Renouncing the coin contract did not freeze that separate media pointer.

The site presents NPC on Ethereum, Base, Robinhood Chain, BNB Chain and Solana, but those are identifiers for different deployments rather than one contract copied unchanged. Base is the clearest counterexample: 0xB166…d87d is a BeaconProxy, its owner and beacon resolve to the Token Bridge at 0x8d2d…9627, and the verified wrapped-token implementation reserves mint, burn and token-detail updates to that bridge. Verified governance messages can upgrade the bridge implementation. Ethereum’s zero owner therefore says nothing about Base supply or upgrade control.

Mediacoins expands the idea while Launchly stays in the future tense

The later Mediacoins paper generalized NPC’s experiment to songs, videos, games and two-sided tokens. It also admits the standard is experimental, may cost more gas and has not passed an official EIP process. The site carefully calls community examples proofs of concept rather than launches; NPC Game is one such demonstration.

The homepage still marks Launchly “coming soon,” even though it displays a $DTACO example and a gallery. Those demonstrations show the intended creator flow, not evidence that a public launcher is available. The working scope is narrower: the Ethereum conversion at /transform, the separate mint-closed Custom NPC ERC-721 collection at /app, site identity tools and experimental demonstrations. None turns an NPC unit into copyright, project equity or a claim on future launcher revenue.

What is Non-Playable Coin?

Non-Playable Coin (NPC) launched on 2023-07-29 as a meme token built from the grey NPC Wojak that spread in 2018. The project does not identify a team and explicitly disclaims affiliation with the meme’s creator. On Ethereum, ERC-20 contract 0x8eD97a637A790Be1feff5e888d43629dc05408F6 is paired with ERC-1155 contract 0x31B73666cA5874950e94baBc0c5f93419faCc82b, token id 1. Both began with 8,050,126,520 whole units, a number the site presents as the launch-day human population. The same inventory can move between a fungible market representation and identical NFT units.

What problem does Non-Playable Coin solve?

A meme coin is easy to divide and quote in a liquidity pool, while an NFT can carry media metadata and appear in an NFT wallet or marketplace. NPC created two equal nominal supplies, then made the ERC-20 contract a vault that exchanges units it holds against a caller’s units in the other representation. This does not create unique art for every holder: the paired NFT is one ERC-1155 token id with many interchangeable units. It changes representation and trading venue, not the economic or intellectual-property rights attached to the meme.

How does Non-Playable Coin work?

The Ethereum ERC-20 minted all 8,050,126,520 × 10^18 base units to itself and permanently points to ERC-1155 id 1. The Solidity names are easy to reverse: Transform takes whole ERC-1155 units and releases the same number of whole ERC-20 NPC, while Respawn returns ERC-20 and releases ERC-1155. The current /transform page presents the token-to-NFT journey under the page label “Transform,” but the contract call for that direction is Respawn. Neither call mints or burns. The Ethereum ERC-20 owner is the zero address; the separate ERC-1155 owner can only redirect its base metadata URI after construction. Base address 0xB166E8B140D35D9D8226E40C09f757BAC5A4d87d has a different design: it is a BeaconProxy whose owner/beacon is the Wormhole-style Token Bridge at 0x8d2de8d2f73f1f4cab472ac9a881c9b123c79627. That bridge alone can invoke the wrapped token implementation’s mint, burn and metadata-update functions, and verified governance messages can upgrade the bridge implementation. The official site also lists Robinhood Chain, BNB Chain and Solana identifiers, but no source reviewed here proves they reproduce Ethereum’s conversion or control model.

Key facts

  • NPC uses CoinGecko id non-playable-coin and ticker NPC; the reviewed transformation pair is on Ethereum.
  • The project dates launch to 2023-07-29 and chose 8,050,126,520 units as a symbolic launch-day population snapshot.
  • Ethereum ERC-20: 0x8eD97a637A790Be1feff5e888d43629dc05408F6; 18 decimals; paired ERC-1155: 0x31B73666cA5874950e94baBc0c5f93419faCc82b, token id 1.
  • Transform receives whole ERC-1155 units and pays whole ERC-20 NPC; Respawn receives ERC-20 and returns ERC-1155.
  • The conversion transfers inventory between contracts and users. It does not mint or burn either representation.
  • The Ethereum ERC-20 owner is zero and exposes no later mint, tax, pause or blacklist. The ERC-1155 owner 0x1c875c3a44badc390e6e6c92f72636725d348f9c can change baseURI but has no public post-construction mint.
  • Official additional identifiers: Base 0xB166E8B140D35D9D8226E40C09f757BAC5A4d87d; Robinhood Chain 0x241F3Caad03Db31137F641beF005A32176530024; BNB Chain 0xFEbfA339E44c28E2aa9E62Ea1027C9CB4e378605; Solana BeGY8KqKxboEwRbJd1q9H2K829jS4Rc5dEyNMYXCbV5p.
  • Base NPC is a BeaconProxy. Its owner/beacon is Token Bridge 0x8d2de8d2f73f1f4cab472ac9a881c9b123c79627, which controls wrapped-token mint, burn and metadata updates and has a governance-controlled implementation upgrade path.
  • The site calls Mediacoins community examples proofs of concept, not product launches, and labels Launchly as coming soon.
  • The project disclaims a team, roadmap, intrinsic value, financial expectations and affiliation with the original meme creator.

Frequently asked questions

Did the NPC token team create the 2018 NPC meme?

No verified link was found. The grey NPC Wojak circulated anonymously in 2018, and the current project explicitly says it is not affiliated with the meme’s creator. It does not publish a founding-team identity.

Is each NPC coin a unique NFT?

No. The Ethereum counterpart is ERC-1155 token id 1 with billions of interchangeable units. Custom NPC collectibles on the site are a separate experience and should not be confused with the backing inventory.

Which way do Transform and Respawn work?

Transform deposits whole ERC-1155 units and receives whole ERC-20 NPC. Respawn deposits whole ERC-20 NPC and receives ERC-1155 units. The verified source transfers existing inventory rather than minting or burning it.

Has ownership been renounced everywhere?

The Ethereum ERC-20 owner currently reads as the zero address. The paired ERC-1155 has a nonzero owner limited to changing its metadata URI. Base is different again: the wrapped token is a BeaconProxy owned by its Token Bridge; the implementation lets that bridge mint, burn and update token details, while verified bridge-governance messages can upgrade bridge logic.

What rights come with an NPC NFT?

The cited contracts establish possession and conversion of token units. They do not establish company ownership, revenue share, external-asset redemption, copyright in the meme or a relationship with its creator.

Is Mediacoins a finished standard and Launchly live?

The white paper calls Mediacoins experimental and outside an official EIP process. The current site labels its examples as proofs of concept and Launchly as coming soon. A visible $DTACO example or gallery does not establish that the public launcher has shipped. The Ethereum conversion is live at /transform; /app is the separate, mint-closed Custom NPC ERC-721 experience on Base.
