What is Ondo US Dollar Yield?

USDY is Ondo's on-chain representation of a secured, U.S.-dollar-denominated note. Ondo documentation describes the current issuer as Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited and says the former Ondo USDY LLC was folded into the Ondo Stocks umbrella on December 15, 2025. The product is aimed at qualifying non-U.S. individual and institutional investors, while minting and redemption remain subject to onboarding and jurisdictional restrictions.

USDY is the accumulating form: its reference/redemption price rises as eligible collateral earns yield. Ondo also offers rUSDY, a separate rebasing wrapper in which the reference price stays at $1 and the token balance changes. Neither form gives a holder direct ownership of a Treasury security.

What problem does Ondo US Dollar Yield solve?

Traditional stablecoins generally seek dollar utility but do not pass through the yield of their reserves. USDY addresses the product-design problem by combining transferable on-chain settlement with exposure to yield from short-term U.S. dollar assets, while using a note and collateral-agent structure rather than presenting the token as a bank deposit or Treasury bill.

The access problem is narrower than a permissionless stablecoin's: subscriptions and redemptions require onboarding, and U.S. persons and residents of prohibited jurisdictions cannot use the issuer's primary issuance and redemption channels. USDY therefore provides a regulated-access product for eligible global investors, not universal access.

How does Ondo US Dollar Yield work?

After onboarding, eligible users can mint USDY with USDC through Ondo's application; the documentation also describes bank-wire purchases for deposits of $100,000 or more. Redemptions may be made by bank wire to non-U.S. bank accounts or through Ondo Global Markets for USDC, subject to the applicable terms and eligibility rules. Yield is reflected in the USDY reference/redemption price rather than paid as a separate distribution.

USDY is an ERC-20 with 18 decimals on Ethereum and is also deployed across multiple supported networks. Its supply is variable rather than a fixed governance-token allocation: minting and redemption change outstanding supply, while rUSDY represents USDY locked in a wrapper and rebases balances daily. The verified Ethereum implementation exposes role-controlled mint and burn, pause/unpause, allowlist, blocklist and sanctions-list configuration. The Ethereum token is behind a proxy whose ABI exposes admin and implementation upgrades, so holders must treat administrator and upgrade-key risk as material. Cross-chain transfers use LayerZero OFT burn/mint routes with selected DVNs, configurable rate limits and an emergency pause.

Key facts

  • USDY launched on August 3, 2023 as a tokenized note secured by U.S. Treasuries and bank deposits; the historical launch issuer was Ondo USDY LLC.
  • Current Ondo documentation says Ondo Global Markets (BVI) Limited issues USDY and that Ondo USDY LLC was folded into the Ondo Stocks umbrella on December 15, 2025.
  • USDY is designed for qualifying non-U.S. individuals and institutions; U.S. persons and residents of listed prohibited jurisdictions cannot subscribe, acquire or redeem through the issuer.
  • USDY accrues yield through an increasing reference/redemption price; rUSDY is a wrapped, rebasing representation whose balance increases as yield accrues.
  • USDY holders receive economic exposure to short-term Treasuries, not direct ownership or a right to receive specific Treasury securities.
  • The Ethereum USDY contract is 0x96F6eF951840721AdBF46Ac996b59E0235CB985C and uses 18 decimals; the verified implementation exposes role-based mint, burn, pause, allowlist, blocklist and sanctions controls.
  • The Ethereum token is a transparent-style proxy with admin/changeAdmin and upgradeTo/upgradeToAndCall functions visible in the explorer ABI; this is an administrator and upgradeability risk, not a holder governance right.
  • Ondo's current bridge documentation describes LayerZero OFT burn/mint transfers, independent DVNs, emergency pause and configurable per-pathway rate limits.

Frequently asked questions

Is USDY a stablecoin or a Treasury bill?

Ondo describes USDY as a tokenized secured note, not a traditional stablecoin. It may be secured by short-term Treasuries, Treasury ETF shares or bank deposits depending on issuance date, but the token itself is not a Treasury and does not grant direct rights to receive one.

Who can buy or redeem USDY?

Eligible non-U.S. individuals and institutions may use Ondo's onboarding and purchase flows. U.S. persons and residents or entities in listed prohibited jurisdictions are excluded, and some jurisdictions require professional, qualified or accredited-investor status.

How does USDY yield reach holders?

The accumulating USDY form reflects yield through a higher reference/redemption price. rUSDY is a wrapped form that keeps a $1 reference price and rebases the holder's token balance; it does not represent a separate pool of Treasuries.

Does holding USDY give me ownership of the underlying Treasuries?

No. Ondo's legal notes expressly say USDY provides economic exposure but is not itself a U.S. Treasury and does not give holders rights to hold or receive specific Treasuries. Any security or redemption rights come from the note's governing documents and eligibility terms, not from the ERC-20 label.

Is USDY supply fixed, and is there a vesting schedule?

USDY is an issued-and-redeemed product, so supply changes with subscriptions, redemptions and the wrapped rUSDY representation; it is not a fixed team-token allocation. No holder vesting schedule is identified in the reviewed current product documentation.

Can the USDY contract be paused, censored or upgraded?

Yes, the verified Ethereum implementation exposes role-controlled minting, burning, pausing, allowlist, blocklist and sanctions-list configuration. The deployed token is a proxy with admin and implementation-upgrade functions. The explorer confirms these interfaces, but it does not by itself establish who currently controls every role; current role ownership must be checked on-chain.
